DJ FAT CONTROLLER Exclusive Interview @ Strictly Nuskool Blog

The man behind the huge '90s anthem 'In Complete Darkness' opens his personal files on an exclusive interview @ Strictly Nuskool Blog, just few days before his performance in Poland alongside Altern8, Baby D and many more others!
Ladies & Gents, this is DJ FAT CONTROLLER in complete...Oldskool!

(1) Back in 1993 when... "...We are all the same..It is only our knowledge and wisdom that separates us. Dont let your eyes deceive you.". Lyrics deep inside in every raving soul.."

Can you share with us your feelings back then when you finished the '93 anthem 'In Complete Darkness'? Were you sure about this success?

Back in '93 my feelings whilst making 'In Complete Darkness' was that the music was changing to a much darker sound whilst I preferred the more happier side of things. I preferred emotive strings, stab patterns and pianos. As it looked like the scene was starting to divide my idea behind
'In Complete Darkness' was that no matter what the genre of rave music, we was all ravers and irrespective of our differences within music we should just get on and rave as one.

I never had any prior thoughts of success of the track, the whole idea of it was to simply make people dance on the dancefloor. The sheer success of the track is really testament to the fact I'd simply managed to catch the moment right within that Specific moment of the rave era!

(2) What forced you entering into DJing and production?

I originally started DJ'ing at the age of 14, doing the school discos and then when leaving school at 15 I bought a mobile disco and started doing loads of local parties. At 16 I started playing in nightclubs and then at 18 I was lucky enough to turn professional and for many a year made my living out of DJ'ing.

The production side of things came much later in 92.

(3) How you came up picking the Fat Controller alias?

The name 'Fat Controller' came at around 86-87, when I started playing acid and house in the local area to Torquay. A good friend of mine had seen a few posters with my then name on 'DJ Jay' and said that I should really be called 'The Fat Controller' as it seemed that I was in control of the local rave scene!

Obviously I was big boned even back then! And the name just stuck from then on!

(4) Around 3 decades of music, gigs and oldskool buzzin in general. Can you tell us your top living experience?

Now its in excess of 30 years of playing and making music it is obvious there has been many a high, with the odd low within that time music wise, also during my career in the film industry there was so many highs, but pretty much anyone who is a parent and has achieved things out of the normal will say the same, everything in life paled into insignificance on the birth of my children.

Over the years I have been contacted by people that have had the lyrics tattooed on them, some have even said they are having the track played at their funeral. That is something that makes you feel pretty humble and also makes me realise the impact a simple record had on quite a large amount of people!

(5) This year you've released a special package of around 40 remixes on your "In Complete Darkness", made by various nuskool/nu-rave producers.

How do you see Nuskool Hardcore & Nu-Rave scene at the moment? Any producer or label you rate these days?

The remix project is something that just gathered momentum all on its own, from a simple idea of the remix to so many people contacting me to have a chance to make a remix. The album idea simply gave a lot of people a platform to show that they are producing music I do not go out of my way to listen to new music, I simply keep on moving with all the music of my past.
Obviously the UK hardcore scene went far too techno for me (should have been called happy techno) and it was purely the love for the older music that inspired me to get out and about once again even now I am producing again everything I have worked on so far and new material I have in production has a huge influence of what we call the old skool era.

(6) You're visiting Poland in few days where playing alongside Baby D, Altern8, MC Whizzkid, Damage inc. and some other established local hardcore soldiers.

What can people expect from that night on your performance? Any message to Polish crew?

The Poland gig is something I have been looking forward to for a very long time, it has been a good few years since I experienced playing abroad and Poland is a country I have never visited before! I have done a bit of homework on the Internet to see what has gone on in the past in Lodz and I have also spoken to other DJs that have previously played there It has been an honour to get messages and comments from people about my 'In Complete Darkness' track from Poland that back in the day I had no idea was liked so much there!

The good thing about this weekend's gig is that I get 90 minutes instead of the usual hour, so it gives me a great opportunity to hit them with a massive amount of classic old skool.

I just hope they are prepared for a mental 90 minutes ram packed with 100% bangers!

(7) Bigup the Fat Controller and thank you for these essential words! Wishing you all the best!
Any closing message of shouts out to anyone?

A big thank you to the entire Old Skool Family that have been supporting the weekly #OldSkool Show and the gigs I have played recently. It is down to their support that has helped me push so far back into the scene!
